Best Mediterranean Cruises for 2027: Celebrity vs Princess vs Royal Caribbean & More

The best Mediterranean cruise for 2027 depends less on the logo on the ship and more on who is traveling, what you want to do ashore and how much the ship itself matters to your vacation.

Celebrity, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Virgin Voyages, MSC, Viking and Oceania can all take you through the Mediterranean, but they are not trying to deliver the same experience. A family with teenagers, a couple celebrating an anniversary and two adults who care mostly about food and historic ports may all choose different ships—even on similar itineraries.

For 2027, the region is especially strong. Celebrity has seven ships scheduled in the Mediterranean, Princess has more than 130 Mediterranean departures within its Europe program, Royal Caribbean has both Western Mediterranean and Greek Isles options, and Virgin Voyages is expanding its adult-only Mediterranean program from Athens and Barcelona.

This guide compares the mainstream, premium and upscale cruise lines I would examine first. If you want a broader overview of ship styles and how I approach cruise planning, start with my Ocean Cruises guide. If you already know you want a smaller, more exclusive experience, jump to my Best Luxury Mediterranean Cruises for 2027 guide, where I compare Explora Journeys, Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, Seabourn, Silversea and Regent.

Best Mediterranean Cruises for 2027 at a Glance

  • Best overall premium Mediterranean cruise: Celebrity Cruises
  • Best for first-time Mediterranean cruisers: Princess Cruises
  • Best for families and teenagers: Royal Caribbean
  • Best adults-only Mediterranean cruise: Virgin Voyages
  • Best for value and itinerary choice: MSC Cruises
  • Best destination-focused cruise: Viking Ocean
  • Best food-focused upscale option: Oceania Cruises

There is no single winner for everyone. My goal is to match the cruise line + itinerary + ship to the way you actually want to travel.

Not sure which Mediterranean cruise fits your family or travel style? I can compare the ships and itineraries that make sense for your dates and budget.

1. Celebrity Cruises: Best Overall Premium Mediterranean Cruise

If a couple asked me to start with one premium cruise line for the Mediterranean in 2027, Celebrity would be near the top of my list.

Celebrity’s 2027 Mediterranean season is unusually broad. The line lists seven ships in the region, including Celebrity Xcel, Ascent, Apex, Equinox, Eclipse, Constellation and Infinity, with departures from Rome, Barcelona, Athens, Ravenna and Lisbon. That gives travelers substantial choice without moving into a mass-market ship experience.

The reason I like Celebrity here is balance. The ships feel contemporary and adult-oriented, dining is stronger than on many mainstream competitors, and the product works well for couples while still being accessible to families. Celebrity Xcel is particularly interesting because it is one of the newest ships in the market and returns to Europe for 2027.

Who I would recommend Celebrity to

  • Couples and anniversary trips
  • Adults who want a modern ship without moving into ultra-luxury
  • Travelers who care about food and design
  • First-time cruisers who want something more refined than mass market
  • Families who want a premium experience without a kid-focused ship

2. Princess Cruises: Best for First-Time Mediterranean Cruisers

Princess is a very strong option for travelers who want a more traditional cruise experience and a large menu of Mediterranean itineraries.

Princess has announced more than 136 Mediterranean departures across 51 itineraries for 2027, ranging from seven to 42 days. Sun Princess and Enchanted Princess are major players in the region, with homeports including Athens, Barcelona, Rome, Istanbul and Trieste.

I particularly like Princess for a first Mediterranean trip because it makes the region relatively easy to understand. There are many dates, itinerary lengths and embarkation ports, and the product tends to work well for couples, multigenerational groups and travelers who want a recognizable cruise format.

Who I would recommend Princess to

  • First-time Mediterranean cruisers
  • Couples and multigenerational families
  • Travelers who want lots of itinerary choices
  • Guests who prefer a traditional cruise experience
  • Travelers interested in longer back-to-back Mediterranean voyages

3. Royal Caribbean: Best Mediterranean Cruise for Families

For families—especially families with children or teenagers—Royal Caribbean is the easiest recommendation on this list.

Royal Caribbean has 2027 Western Mediterranean cruises from Barcelona aboard Legend of the Seas and Greek Isles itineraries from Rome aboard Odyssey of the Seas. A typical seven-night Odyssey itinerary can combine Santorini, Ephesus, Mykonos and Naples with sea days that give families time to actually enjoy the ship.

That last point matters. Mediterranean cruises can be extremely port intensive. For children and teenagers, a ship with strong pools, entertainment and activities can make the sea days—and evenings after touring—much more enjoyable.

Families should not plan a Mediterranean cruise like a Caribbean cruise. Many days start early, involve long transfers or hours of walking, and may return to the ship late. I would build in at least one lighter port day or sea day rather than scheduling a full-day tour every day.

Who I would recommend Royal Caribbean to

  • Families with children or teenagers
  • Multigenerational groups
  • Travelers who want the ship to be part of the vacation
  • First-time cruisers who enjoy entertainment and activities
  • Families balancing sightseeing with downtime

4. Virgin Voyages: Best Adults-Only Mediterranean Cruise

Virgin Voyages gives the Mediterranean a very different feel. It is adults-only, energetic and contemporary, and it can be a great fit for travelers who want a cruise without children but are not looking for traditional luxury.

Virgin’s 2027 program includes Scarlet Lady and Resilient Lady on Mediterranean routes from Athens and Barcelona. Itineraries range from seven-night Adriatic and Greek Isles trips to longer sailings linking Greece, Turkey, Italy, France and Spain, with some overnight stays.

I would not recommend Virgin to someone looking for a quiet, classic cruise. But for younger-at-heart adults, couples and groups of friends who want nightlife, modern dining and a less conventional onboard atmosphere, it can be one of the most interesting options in the region.

Who I would recommend Virgin to

  • Adults traveling without children
  • Couples and groups of friends
  • Travelers who prefer a modern, less traditional cruise
  • Guests who value nightlife and included dining variety
  • People who like a livelier onboard atmosphere

5. MSC Cruises: Best for Value and Mediterranean Choice

MSC is difficult to ignore in the Mediterranean because the company has such a large presence in Europe and offers extensive year-round itinerary choice.

For 2027, MSC is already selling both Western and Eastern Mediterranean programs, including departures from Barcelona and the Venice area, plus routes covering Rome, Naples, Genoa, Marseille, Dubrovnik, the Greek islands and Istanbul.

MSC can offer excellent value, particularly for travelers who care more about the destination than having the most polished onboard service. But I would compare the specific ship carefully. The MSC fleet is large, and the experience can vary more from ship to ship than it does on Celebrity or Viking.

Who I would recommend MSC to

  • Value-conscious Mediterranean travelers
  • Families
  • Travelers wanting a wide selection of European embarkation ports
  • Guests comfortable with a more international onboard atmosphere
  • Travelers who prioritize itinerary over service consistency

6. Viking Ocean: Best Destination-Focused Mediterranean Cruise

Viking sits above the mainstream cruise lines in price and atmosphere, but I include it here because it is one of the best bridges between premium cruising and true luxury.

The ships are adults-only, every stateroom has a veranda, and the experience is deliberately focused on the destination rather than waterslides, casinos or large-scale entertainment. Viking’s 2027 Mediterranean portfolio includes routes such as the eight-day Iconic Western Mediterranean and longer voyages through Italy, Croatia, Greece and the Adriatic.

One guided excursion in each port is included, which changes the value proposition when comparing Viking with less-inclusive cruise fares.

Who I would recommend Viking to

  • Adults who want a calm ship
  • Travelers focused on history and culture
  • Guests who appreciate included touring
  • Couples who do not need nightlife or family activities
  • Travelers considering a step up from mainstream cruising

7. Oceania Cruises: Best Food-Focused Upscale Option

Oceania is another line that sits between the mainstream/premium market and ultra-luxury. I include it because its smaller ships, destination-heavy itineraries and emphasis on food make it particularly well suited to Europe.

For travelers who look at Celebrity or Princess and think, “I want something smaller and more refined, but I am not ready to pay Regent or Ritz-Carlton prices,” Oceania deserves serious consideration.

Oceania also has a growing Mediterranean presence outside the traditional summer season, which can be appealing if you want fewer crowds and a more city-focused trip.

Who I would recommend Oceania to

  • Food-focused travelers
  • Couples who prefer smaller ships
  • Experienced cruisers
  • Travelers who prioritize ports over onboard attractions
  • Guests looking for an upscale step beyond premium cruising

Mainstream, Premium or Luxury: Which Level Should You Choose?

The Mediterranean is one destination where moving up a cruise category can materially change the trip. Smaller ships can reach different ports, premium lines often improve dining and service, and luxury lines may include more of the trip in the upfront fare.

Which Mediterranean Itinerary Is Best?

Western Mediterranean: Spain, France and Italy

Best for first-time visitors. Barcelona, the French Riviera, Florence, Rome and Naples give you a huge amount of variety in one trip. Celebrity, Princess and Royal Caribbean all have strong options here.

Greek Islands and Turkey

Best for scenery and ancient history. Look for Athens, Santorini, Mykonos and Ephesus, but I also like itineraries that add Crete, Rhodes or Istanbul. Celebrity, Princess, Royal Caribbean and Virgin all compete strongly here.

Adriatic and Croatia

Best for coastal scenery and smaller historic cities. Dubrovnik, Split, Kotor and Venice-area ports make this one of my favorite Mediterranean regions. Smaller ships become increasingly attractive here.

Barcelona, Rome or Athens: Where Should You Start?

Barcelona is probably the easiest gateway to the Western Mediterranean and works especially well with Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Princess, MSC and Virgin.

Rome (Civitavecchia) gives you access to both Western Mediterranean and Greek Isles itineraries. I would strongly recommend at least two nights in Rome before the cruise rather than treating it only as an embarkation point.

Athens (Piraeus) is the natural choice for Greece, Turkey and the Adriatic. Celebrity, Princess and Virgin all have strong 2027 Athens programs.

What Does a 2027 Mediterranean Cruise Cost?

Fares change constantly by date, cabin and promotion, so I would use ranges only as a starting point. Current 2027 published examples show that an entry-level seven-night Mediterranean cruise can begin around $900–$1,600 per person on lines such as Celebrity or Royal Caribbean, while adults-only and upscale products can start higher.

The more useful number is the total vacation cost. Drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities, shore excursions, specialty dining, flights, hotels and transfers can easily change which cruise is actually the better value.

When Is the Best Time to Cruise the Mediterranean?

  • April and May: cooler weather, lighter crowds and often excellent value.
  • June: long days and generally strong weather before peak summer heat.
  • July and August: best for school schedules and beach weather, but busiest and hottest.
  • September: one of my favorite months for warm weather with somewhat fewer crowds.
  • October: excellent for cities and culture, with more variable weather.

Mediterranean Cruise FAQs

Is Celebrity or Princess better for the Mediterranean?

I would generally choose Celebrity for a couple who values contemporary design, dining and a more premium atmosphere. I would choose Princess for travelers who value itinerary choice, a traditional cruise experience and straightforward first-time Mediterranean planning.

Is Royal Caribbean good for a Mediterranean cruise?

Yes—particularly for families. The key is balancing the ship with the itinerary. Royal Caribbean makes the most sense when you genuinely want to use the onboard activities rather than spending every possible hour ashore.

Is seven nights enough?

Yes. Seven nights is enough for a focused Western Mediterranean or Greek Isles trip. If you have the time and budget, I prefer roughly 9 to 14 nights because the Mediterranean is port intensive and longer trips feel less rushed.

Should I choose the ship or itinerary first?

For the Mediterranean, I would usually choose the itinerary first—then select the best ship among the lines that sail it. The exception is a family trip where onboard activities are a major part of the vacation.

How I Would Choose Your Mediterranean Cruise

If you contacted me about the Mediterranean, I would start with six questions:

  1. Who is traveling? Couple, family, teenagers, multigenerational group or adults-only?
  2. Which region matters most? Western Mediterranean, Greek Islands, Adriatic or a combination?
  3. How important is the ship itself?
  4. Do you want premium, upscale or luxury?
  5. How much touring do you expect to do ashore?
  6. What is your realistic total trip budget?

My 2027 Mediterranean Picks

  • Couples wanting the best all-around premium experience: Celebrity Cruises
  • First Mediterranean cruise: Princess Cruises
  • Families and teenagers: Royal Caribbean
  • Adults-only: Virgin Voyages
  • Best value: MSC Cruises
  • Destination-focused adults: Viking Ocean
  • Food-focused upscale travel: Oceania Cruises
  • True luxury: see the Luxury Mediterranean Cruises guide

For most Mediterranean trips, choose the itinerary first. Then choose the cruise line that lets you experience those ports in the way you actually want to travel.
